What is Geotagging?

Geotagging uses metadata to add geographical information to digital resources like photographs, videos or websites. The metadata consists of latitude, longitude and distance. To simplify the definition, geotagging allows you to mark the precise location of where a photo was taken or a video was recorded.

Some phones have this technology already built into them. There are also many photo sharing websites such as Flickr and Panoramio and these can be seen on the popular Google Earth.

Below is a video that explian Geotagging in detail

This website has been created for teachers to explain how to use geotagging technology in the classroom. It gives you instructions on setting up geotagging accounts and provided tachers with a sample lesson on how you could utilise this technology in the classroom.

How to Geotag

1

You need to create a Flickr account. This is free and very easy to do. You can create an account for the whole class to access, this will allow student's to add photo's into the class Flickr album and geo tag them. Or students can create their own Flickr accounts. All that is needed are some personal details and an email address.

2

You then upload a photo into your accounts photostream. Then click the localize bookmark. This will replace your photo with a google map. Move the arrow to the loction you wish to geotag. A URL will appear at the bottom of your photo which will take you to Google map and the location you geotagged your photo.

Flickr is just one program you can use to geotag your photo's. There are many different sites that also geotag photos, it is just finding the one that suits your class's needs.
